Hassan Visits Fire Fighters in Portsmouth

Friday, October 7, 2022

In case you missed it, yesterday after receiving the endorsement of the Professional Fire Fighters of New Hampshire (PFFNH), Senator Maggie Hassan stopped by Portsmouth to thank local members for their support and for their life-saving work to strengthen public safety. Hassan spoke with local fire fighters, including current PFFNH President Captain Brian Ryll.

In its endorsement, PFFNH cited Hassan’s ongoing commitment to public safety, her support for fire fighters, and her longtime record of securing resources to keep our communities safe.

Senator Hassan has consistently stood with Granite State fire fighters. Senator Hassan passed emergency relief for state and local governments to assist fire departments during the COVID-19 pandemic. She worked to increase funding for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grants programs through the American Rescue Plan that was signed into law. Both programs have directly helped New Hampshire fire departments; most recently, the Berlin Fire Department was able to replace a decades-old fire engine thanks to this program and Senator Hassan’s advocacy. Senator Hassan also supported a bipartisan bill that was signed into law to deliver better access to benefits for first responders and their families following injury or death in the line of duty. Additionally, she helped introduce bipartisan legislation to help protect fire fighters from PFAS chemicals, which pose risks to their health and safety.
