In a press call this afternoon, Senator Hassan made clear that New Hampshire’s Republican Senate candidates would be yes votes for Mitch McConnell’s agenda to ban abortion nationwide. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe, national Republicans and anti-choice extremists from Mike Pence to Kevin McCarthy are pushing a nationwide abortion ban — a position that Mitch McConnell has strongly supported since the 1980s. Senator Hassan’s opponents’ anti-choice records and positions make clear that they would be yes votes for McConnell’s push for a nationwide abortion ban.
Senator Hassan’s Remarks As Delivered:
Hello everyone, and I really want to thank you for joining today’s call.
In the past four days, I have heard from countless Granite Staters who are really deeply alarmed about the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe and take away a woman’s fundamental rights away. For the first time in our history, our daughters now have fewer freedoms than their mothers did.
Mitch McConnell and other anti-choice extremists have made clear that they will not stop with overturning Roe. For decades, they have made it their mission to outlaw abortion nationwide.
As recently as last month, McConnell said that a national abortion ban would be “possible” if Roe is overturned and he became Senate majority leader again. And on three different occasions, McConnell sponsored constitutional amendments that would have banned abortion nationwide with no exceptions for rape or incest. That’s his record — and that’s what he would try to do again if Republicans retake the Senate.
The Republicans running against me have clear records: they would be yes votes for McConnell’s agenda to ban abortion nationally and send women and doctors to prison for addressing a woman’s health care needs.
Just look at my opponents’ records. Chuck Morse was the architect of New Hampshire’s first abortion ban in modern history. He voted repeatedly against exceptions for rape, incest, and fatal fetal anomaly.
Don Bolduc said that the ban did not go far enough.
And Kevin Smith promised his supporters that he would end abortion, in his words: “once and for all.”
My opponents have made themselves very, very clear: if elected, they would work to eviscerate a woman’s fundamental rights. In the world’s greatest democracy, they would make women second class citizens.
The stakes in this race could not be higher. American women cannot afford to have a McConnell led Senate Majority, or have any of my opponents in the United States Senate. A woman’s most fundamental freedoms will be on the ballot this November.
I have promised the people of my state that I will never stop fighting to reclaim the freedoms that we lost with this decision and I refuse to allow this to be the final say on a woman’s freedom.
