A political wing of Planned Parenthood will endorse Gov. Maggie Hassan in her Democratic challenge against Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte, NH1 News learned.

…Planned Parenthood Action Fund said that Hassan’s “a strong advocate for New Hampshire women and families, and is the only candidate in this race who will protect a woman’s right to safely access critical health services and make her own health decisions.”

…”Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to endorse Maggie Hassan for U.S. Senate. From her time in the State Senate to her work as Governor, Maggie has been a tireless advocate for women and families in New Hampshire and across the country,” Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said in a statement.

“Maggie has always stood up against those who launch baseless attacks against health care providers like Planned Parenthood health centers. Unfortunately, her opponent Senator Kelly Ayotte is fighting to take us backwards. Ayotte believes Roe v. Wadeshould be overturned, supports letting employers deny contraceptive coverage, and has voted over and over to block women’s access to critical health services. New Hampshire’s women and families deserve better,” Richards added.

Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund Board Chair Iris Estabrook said that Granite State “women know they can count on Governor Hassan to fight in Washington for sound economic policies like equal pay and paid family leave, while also championing the ability of all women to make their own health care decision without government interference.”

“She’s been a champion for Planned Parenthood here in New Hampshire and the often lifesaving preventative care we provide while working to expand access to health care services in our state,” Estabrook added.

Planned Parenthood is the largest single provider of reproductive health services, including abortions, in the country. In accepting the endorsement, Hassan said that “Planned Parenthood is crucial both as a leading provider of affordable primary care services and also as an advocate for the wellbeing of New Hampshire women and families, and I am extremely proud to receive the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Action Fund,”

And Hassan added that “I strongly support a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions and control her own destiny.”

…Last month, Planned Parenthood Votes, a separate political wing of Planned Parenthood, made Ayotte the target of their first Senate TV commercial this election cycle. The spot the criticized the senator for what they called her “abysmal record on women’s health.” The spot also criticized Ayotte for standing in lockstep with nearly every other Senate Republican in insisting that the next president rather than President Barack Obama nominate a successor to the late Supreme Court associate justice Antonin Scalia…“Well, I certainly think that Roe should be overturned but I think that has to be done at the United States Supreme Court,” Ayotte says.
