GOFFSTOWN – While Kelly Ayotte attempts to cover up her real record of opposing campaign finance reform, the fact is that Ayotte strongly supports the backward Citizens United decision and has consistently worked to block meaningful campaign finance reform. And Ayotte’s special interest backers have spent more than $40 million dollars to support her campaign.
FACT: Kelly Ayotte voted to block a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s misguided Citizens United decision that opened the floodgates of outside spending in American politics.
FACT: Kelly Ayotte has spoken out frequently against meaningful campaign finance reform and efforts to get big money out of politics. She said it would be “dangerous” and “absurd” to overturn Citizens United and even went as far as to say “We need more groups like Americans For Prosperity,” referring to the Koch Brothers’ main dark money political arm.
FACT: Kelly Ayotte also has a record of voting against increasing transparency and disclosure in the political system. She voted twice against the Disclose Act, which would require groups and companies to disclose independent expenditures and donations to independent groups over $10,000. And earlier this year she voted against an amendment that would have required Big Oil companies to disclose their political spending.
FACT: Kelly Ayotte refused to sign Maggie Hassan’s strengthened New Hampshire People’s Pledge.
FACT: Kelly Ayotte has benefited from $40 million in outside spending from her special interest backers. The largest spending dark money group in the New Hampshire Senate race so far has been One Nation, a special interest group linked to Mitch McConnell and Karl Rove that ran ads widely decried across the state for politicizing the heroin and opioid crisis. The NRSC, an organization for which Ayotte has personally fundraised, has also spent millions to run similar vile smears.
